Itinerary Overview:
Day 1: Arusha to Lake Natron

Drive from Arusha through the village of Mto Wa Mto and enter the Great Rift Valley, passing via Engaruaka basin and into a semi-desert area hot wild and dusty with extinct volcano’s Kitumbene and Gelai off to the right and the Mountain of God “Ol Doinyo Lengai” always in front. Around midday we arrive at Falls Camp on the banks of the Engaresero river, a welcome place to shower or bathe in the river,or take a trek to the waterfalls hidden in the western wall of the rift valley.

Day 2: Mt. Ol Donyo Lengai Climb – Engarasero Village

The trek up to this active volcanic mountain is an exceptionally demanding climb with an altitude of 2878m.The trek starts at midnight or shortly after so you can walk during the cool hours and reach the summit by dawn. This is an active volcano and lava flows are common. It’s a truly unusual destination for those who really want to get off the beaten path. Reach at the summit during sunrise and spend some time there before descending down to the base where we are picked up by our vehicle and transferred to our camp in Lake Natron for shower and hot lunch. Late afternoon excursion to Lake Natron shores to view the Lesser Flamingos in their breeding habitat or for the fitter ones a hike up to the Engare Sero waterfalls.

Itinerary Overview:
Day 1: Arusha to Ngorongoro Olmoti Crater Trek

Your day starts off with a 4-hour drive to Nainokanoka Village where you will be based tonight. During your transfer, if it’s not too foggy, you may get great views of the Ngorongoro Crater from the viewpoint on the edge of the crater rim. You then proceed along the Henry Fosb Rooke road through the dense forest towards Nainokanoka, where you will get to see wildlife such as buffalos and wildebeest. Today you will explore the Olmoti Crater and Munge waterfalls on a 3-hour hike. The Olmoti Crater is a shallow grassy crater where the Munge River originates.

Day 2: Trek from Nainokanoka Village to Bulati Village

We depart Nainokanoka camp at 0800hrs and commence our trek to Bulati Village. We will pass a few Maasai Bomas on our way. We will have packed lunch half way to Bulati. We cross the Elbulbul depression, a vast grassland with no trees, but many zebras can be seen grazing, wildebeests, raptors due to the many mole rat mounds found in the area. We arrive in Bulati early in the afternoon for rest and refreshments. Late afternoon followed by Maasai Boma visit in the village of Bulati where we will be spending the night.

Day 3: Trek from Bulati Village to Empakaai Crater

Today you will change the environment from temperate grassland to montane forest zone on the crater rim. Plenty of spectacular panoramic views of the landscape can be viewed. We have packed lunch half way on the trek. In the afternoon you will descend into the crater where you can see lesser flamingos who reside on the crater soda lake. The Caldera is 300m deep and 6kms wide. The trek is roughly 45 minutes down and an hour walk back up. Today we will be camping right on the rim of the Empakaai Crater.

Day 4: Trek from Empakaai Crater to Acacia Camp

After breakfast, we walk a short way around the Empakaai crater to stretch our legs and get some good panoramic photos of the caldera. The first half of the trek is to Nayobi village where you will stop for lunch. From Nayobi we head down to Acacia Campsite. You will head out on a late afternoon walk to view the surrounding area and to take photos of the majestic Mt. Ol Doinyo Lengai, which is a Maasai name for “Mountain of God”. This mountain is unique amongst geologists because it is the only active volcano on Earth that erupts with a carbonatite, a type of igneous rock rich in carbonates such as calcite and dolomite.

Day 1: Momella gate (1500m) to Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

You will be picked up from your hotel in Arusha at 0800hrs and head to the Momella gate which is the starting point of the trek. The drive to the gate is less than an hour. After the registration you will start your trek accompanied by an armed ranger. Along the route you will pass through the montane forest to the amazing Fig Tree Arch, catch a spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the Momella lakes. You will encounter animals such as cape buffaloes, giraffes, warthogs and bushbucks, to name a few. Your trek will end up at Miriakamba Hut where you will be spending the night.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) to Saddle Hut (3500m)

Today’s trek takes you through the steep path along the ridge of the saddle. Amazing views of the Meru crater, the ash cone and little Meru can be seen along the way. While trekking through the forest keep your eyes peeled for wildlife and the attractive wild flowers. Common animals include buffaloes and the black and white Colobus monkey. Your trek will end up at Saddle hut where you will be spending the night. After resting at the camp you will set off on an hour acclimatization trek to little Meru (3810m) then head back down to Saddle hut.

Day 3: Saddle Hut (3500m) – Summit (Socialist Peak (4566m) – Arusha (1400m)

Your guide will wake you at 00:30 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt at 1:30am. The trail starts off on a steep grade to Rhino Point (3800m) to Cobra Point (4350m). The last hour of the hike you will scramble on a rocky ridge between the crater and inner cliffs of Meru. You will reach the summit of Meru (4565m) at sunrise with spectacular views of Mt. Meru Ash Tray and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Enjoy your views then descend to Momella get while using the northern route (shorter) to descend to the gate. Upon arrival at the gate, you will be picked up and transferred back to your hotel in Arusha town.

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2700m)

You will be collected from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi and taken to the Marangu gate. Once the necessary paper work has been completed, your trek can begin and you will soon be hiking through the dense rainforest. Alongside the impressive vegetation, you will have the chance to catch a glimpse of some primates as you head to the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Kenyan interior.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3700m)

The day begins with an early breakfast. Shortly after you have left Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moor zone. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo and the wide plain of the Masai steppe.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3700m) to Kibo Hut (4700m)

Today’s stage is long and tough. The well-built trail passes the “Last Water point” which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This nearly vegetation less plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. Today’s destination is the Kibo Hut that is usually reached in about 5 – 6 hours. Here, you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short.

Day 4: Kibo Hut (4700m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Horombo Hut (3700m)

Today is “The Big Day” – the summit stage. You will begin your final ascent around midnight which will be long and strenuous. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 – 2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. On your return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits you followed by a 1 – 2 hour break before proceeding back down to Horombo Hut.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3700m) to Marangu Gate (1860m)

Soon, you will once again pass the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After saying goodbye to your mountain crews, a short transfer follows to take you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Once there, you can take a warm and relaxing shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of the Kilimanjaro.
